Dr. Bijayananda Patnaik was my mentor and inspired me to become an ophthalmologist.
He was an amazing guide and friend, who challenged me to do the best for my patients. His genius influenced an entire generation of Indian ophthalmologists. His genuine love for the subject, sheer charismatic brilliance, and constant efforts to give his patients the best, greatly motivated his students and trainees. Dr Patnaik was born in Orissa in 1938. He was driven by an unfortunate experience at medical school when he suffered a total retinal detachment and had to stay in bed for 3 months. He resolved then to dedicate his life to ophthalmology and the treatment of retinal diseases.
In 1965 he graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences with an MS Degree in Ophthalmology, having also earned a Gold Medal for being the best postgraduate student. Soon after, he won a post doc fellowship to work with Professor Hans Goldmann and earn a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of Berne in 1967.
On his return to India in 1969, he joined the faculty at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. Where he set up a specialist Retina Service and did the first fundus fluorescein angiography in India. He also pioneered the use of photocoagulation in the management of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and Eales’ disease. He sadly passed away in 2009 after a battle with cancer. A man of strong convictions, he did not mind calling a spade a spade. He had little patience for incompetence or mediocrity and pushed for excellence at all times. A true inspiration. Milind Pande
